Title: Open Source Patterns
Proposer: claudius_link
Type: Presentation
Duration: 90 minutes
Description:
Open Source has gained major importance throughout many industries. It provides a significant element in the software value chain by offering features, functionality and quality, as well as enabling a faster time to market while saving costs. The Open Source communities provide knowledge and support.
Software development is hardly imaginable without Open Source. Today it is no longer the question ”if” but rather “how” to utilize Open Source, and not how to profit from but how to profit because of Open Source. But there is still a controversy going on with Open Source. While some will use Open Source wherever they see it functional applicable, other are afraid of getting contaminated by using Open Source.
We will look at different ways how Open Source is utilized. From a pure production use, using LInux as an Open Source, creating documents with Open Office, serving web pages through apache, through compiling with GCC, using Open Source programming languages like Perl, Python, and Ruby, to integrating Open Source components, to extending and “producing” Open Source software.
This talk will look at recurring patterns how people, organizations, and companies utilize Open Source. We will analyse how the triple of license, architecture, and distribution method interact. Discuss the impact of Intellectual Property and Patents on Open Source, and look at Open Source business models. The goal is to raise awareness of common misconceptions and to provide a base for a productive discussion about the use of Open Source.
