Make was a revelation and revolution in 1977. But with time it's limitation became apparent. Autotools and CMake have tried to keep it relevant to modern build, but these are really “sticking plasters” on a system past it's time. SCons, a Python-based system, shows that internal domain specific languages (DSLs) are the future for build. SCons comes ready for C, C++, D, Fortran, LaTeX builds out of the box and there are tools for many, many other languages including Java.
